Stanley's Diner, located in Askewville, Virginia opened in 1933 on the corner of 13th and Main Streets and became an immediate success. Stilianous "Stanley" Popaduke, a Greek immigrant and his wife, Alyssa, ran the business out of an old railroad car they purchased with their life's savings of $600. At first, they began by only preparing "American" food and became famous for their 100% Beef, Double-Decker Hamburgers and Open Face Roast Beef Sandwiches, which originally sold for 65 cents.
In 1946, Stanley's brother-in-law Nikolai "Nicky" Pakovich joined the couple and they began offering Greek and Ukrainian foods in addition to their standard fare. Soon people came from miles around to try their incredible offerings including Pastitsio, Lamb, Halushki and seven varieties of Pierogies.
Today, Stanley's in the the same location it has been since 1963, when they moved to their current location on the corner of 22nd and Antietam Avenue. Stanley and Alyssa's grand-daughter, Cindy Crosby, now run the day-to-day operation of the diner.
